Dr. Dennis Bucko, founder and owner of Belladerma Cosmetic Surgery & Skin Care Center, is the talented facelift surgeon San Diego patients trust for beautiful and natural looking results. In addition to being board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and also fully trained in general surgery, Dr. Bucko has studied art and sculpture extensively. The marriage of science and art is essential in plastic surgery — especially in a procedure as complex as a facelift.
An expertly performed facelift can turn back the clock by a decade or more. Following surgery the patient will look younger, refreshed and more animated, and will feel more self-confident. For many of Dr. Bucko’s facelift patients, the operation is life changing.

• Board certified and member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
• Hands on and engaged about your results and care
• Up-to-date on the latest plastic surgery trends and techniques
Experience matters. A San Diego plastic surgeon that has performed hundreds of procedures in his years of practice is a better choice than a plastic surgeon fresh out of residency. Dr. Bucko has been in practice for more than 35 years. He previously served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for two terms and is actively involved in the plastic surgery community as a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Through these positions, Dr. Bucko stays up to date with the latest facelift techniques and technology to enhance patient outcomes. Dr. Bucko has also been Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the prestigious University of California, San Diego’s residency teaching program since 1981.
Dr. Bucko believes that the comfort, safety and satisfaction of his patients are as important as the results he produces. He and his staff strive to deliver excellent patient care. The team spends time informing and educating facelift candidates about the procedure, and helps them make critical decisions about their plan of treatment. Dr. Bucko is engaged and attentive during the pre-operative consultative process and the post-operative stages to ensure his patients feel informed and comfortable with what is taking place. He wants to know what results patients are looking for and also what patients don’t want. Patients often come to Dr. Bucko after they have seen other surgeons and been given conflicting recommendations or inadequate details about facelift surgery. Patients appreciate Dr. Bucko’s analytical approach and the thorough evaluation they receive.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Facelift?
Every patient is different and has a particular area of concern. Dr. Bucko takes a completely customized approach to facelift surgery. He evaluates every patient individually, studying what makes him or her unique and identifying areas that could be subtly improved. Dr. Bucko believes in helping patients make the right choices about which procedures are right for them.
Facelift candidates usually complain about one or more of the following:
Loose, sagging skin in the face, cheek, brow, neck and jowl area
Creases along the lower eyelids
Creases along the nose to the corners of the mouth
Displaced or fallen fat
Loss of healthy skin tone
Excess fat deposits underneath the chin and jawline
Cords or bands on the neck
Based on his analysis of the patient, Dr. Bucko drafts a plan of treatment that will outline various options with specific results in mind. This could be traditional facelift surgery, or Dr. Bucko’s “Belladerma Mini Facelift™,” a less invasive alternative to the standard facelift techniques.
Dr. Bucko personally developed the Belladerma Mini Facelift™ to restore youthful facial contours with minimal trauma and downtime. Excess skin is removed and the facial tissues are lifted into a more desirable position and supported with deep sutures in the muscle fascia for longer lasting benefits than simple “skin lifts.” The Belladerma Mini Facelift™ is ideal for patients under the age of 50 with moderate skin laxity in the face, cheek and neck areas. The Belladerma Mini Facelift™ is also an option for patients that had previous facelift surgery and desire a “tune-up,” often using, and even improving, the original scars.
The Belladerma Mini Facelift™ frequently incorporates neck lift techniques to improve the appearance of loose skin, excess fat deposits and horizontal wrinkles underneath the chin and on the neck.
To enhance the results of the Belladerma Mini Facelift™, Dr. Bucko can combine another surgical or non-surgical treatment to deliver optimal age-defying, skin-smoothing results. For example, the FX carbon dioxide resurfacing laser is often used to complement the results of facelift surgery (instead of a chemical peel or dermabrasion) by reducing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and other pigmentary skin damage. Dr. Bucko compares laser resurfacing to “ironing and cleaning your dress after it has been tailored to fit better.”
The Belladerma Mini Facelift™ does not treat the entire face, and is not for everyone. Certain patients may need a cheek lift, otherwise known as a mid-face lift or malar lift, which treats sagging in the cheeks and hollowness beneath the eyes. This involves lifting the malar (cheek) fat pad and tissue to restore fullness around the cheeks and eyes. Cheek lift will also smooth deep nasolabial folds.
A browlift or forehead lift may also be done at the same time to rejuvenate the upper face and eyelids. Earlobe reduction may be performed on its own or during facelift surgery to repair oversized, elongated or droopy earlobes that may give subtle clues to the aging process. Redundant skin and tissue is removed to create a shorter, smaller lobe. Some patients will even include minor nasal surgery to lift a droopy tip; or a chin implant to create a stronger profile.
Mini Facelift vs. Traditional Facelift: Which Is Best? What Is the Difference?
Both the “Belladerma Mini Facelift™” and traditional “facelift” treat skin laxity in the face and the neck, however the traditional “facelift” is used for more extensive rejuvenation of the middle and upper face, forehead and even the eyelids, and can treat severe signs of facial aging. The Belladerma Mini Facelift™ is more conservative and is appropriate for patients with moderate skin laxity in the lower facial areas, jawline and neck.
Are Facelift Results Permanent?
When performed by a talented and skilled facelift surgeon and with proper maintenance, the results of any facelift can last for many years. Although it can turn back the hands of time, it is does not stop the aging process. Good skin care (e.g., using the right skin care products, moisturizing regularly) and lifestyle habits (e.g., wearing sunscreen, not smoking) can help prolong your facelift results. Dr. Bucko also recommends maintaining your results with injectable (e.g., Botox, dermal fillers) or professional skin care (e.g., photorejuvenation) treatments regularly.
Does a Facelift Treat the Eyes and Neck?
While facelift primarily treats the area in the lower face and neck, it does not treat the eyelids themselves nor the upper facial area around the eyes or sagging cheeks. Patients who wish to improve the appearance of the eyelids and wrinkles around the eyes can benefit from eyelid surgery, or a cheek lift in addition to a more conservative facelift.
Facelift frequently incorporates neck lift and liposuction techniques to treat the chin and neck areas. The result is a sleeker neck and jawline.
So, Which Procedures Should I Do?
The choice of which procedure(s) to use depends on patients’ goals, expectations, limitations and financial means, and an honest and full consultation with Dr. Bucko who can provide the best options.
What Is the Average Recovery Time?
The initial recovery period for facelift typically takes two to three weeks. Initial symptoms should subside within two weeks after surgery while minor swelling and bruising may last a bit longer but can easily be concealed with makeup. A simple Belladerma Mini Facelift creates less swelling and bruising.
When Can I Wash My Face and Wear Makeup?
Dr. Bucko typically allows patients to wash their face and hair 48 after surgery. Patients are usually able to wear makeup two weeks after surgery. Do not wash your face or wear makeup until Dr. Bucko says it is okay to do so.
When Can I Resume Normal Activities and Exercise?
Most patients return to work and resume normal activities one to three weeks after surgery. Patients can typically resume (or start) light exercise two weeks after surgery depending on their healing, the degree of surgery, and their job requirements. Dr. Bucko will provide a more accurate timeline of when you can resume normal activities and exercise during your initial consultation. He may also make modifications during your recovery based on your healing process.
What Factors Affect the Cost of a Facelift?
The cost of your facelift will depend on the amount of correction needed, the techniques used and whether it is combined with another facial rejuvenation procedure. Dr. Bucko can provide a more detailed estimate of your procedure’s cost following a personal consultation.
