More about Breast Reduction Surgery with Dr. Bucko
Each breast reduction candidate has specific complaints relating to the size and weight of her breasts. These concerns may include any of the following:
Unhappiness with the appearance of oversized breasts
Upper back/neck/shoulder pain
Skin irritation under the breasts
Reduced physical activity or limited range of motion
Indentations on the shoulders from bra straps digging into the skin
Emotional discomfort and self-consciousness from unwanted attention
Difficulty finding clothing that fits properly
Numbness in elbows and hands
During consultation, Dr. Bucko carefully listens to the candidate’s complaints and explains how breast reduction can provide relief from physical symptoms and psychological discomfort. He asks candidates to describe their ideal breast size and any other improvements in breast appearance they would like to see (e.g., a perkier position, smaller areolas). This information helps Dr. Bucko construct a surgical plan of treatment.
During a standard breast reduction procedure, excess fat, glandular tissue and skin is removed from the breast. If the areola-nipple complex sags significantly, it can be shifted to a higher position on the breast mound. If the areolas are enlarged or stretched-out, they can be reduced in size. Skin formerly located above the nipple is brought down and around, underneath the breast, to reshape it. Sutures are placed deep within the tissue to support the breasts’ new shape.
Usually the surgical incisions are made around the edge of the areola and vertically down the front of the breast. The extent of the incision depends on the desired amount of reduction. Scarring from the incisions fades over time and can be concealed under a bra or bathing suit top. Dr. Bucko rarely needs horizontal incisions in the breast folds to achieve the desired results.
Breast reduction is combined with breast lift to elevate the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall. Breast lift gives the breasts a perkier and more youthful shape and contour.
